Agree w comments on calling a librarian a librarian. A rose by any other name.... and all that.
We still perform the same functions, just using different technology....
Also a firm believer in Library as Place. The distributed model sounds good, if "pricey," but I think having a home base, or Home Planet, is a good concept to keep "imbedded" in the distributed model. Some people DO want to leave their "home" space, and what about multi-disciplinary collaboration in a neutral space? Lots of things to think about....

Thanks for the great blog post. I found it useful and it backs up a theory of mine about multitasking. As a librarian at a small college library with only a few staff members, a certain level of multitasking is often a necessary part of the job. But what is good multitasking and bad multitasking, or should I say, what should be avoided and when is multitasking needed or acceptable? I have just started a blog series you may be interested titled "The Small College Librarian" and multitasking is one area I plan to address. The URL to the first post is at http://thisthatotherthing.wordpress.com/2010/01/04/the-small-college-librarian-%E2%80%93-part-1-%E2%80%93-introduction/

I agree with your assessment as well; and wish I had the solution to that issue. How to inspire a love of learning and an appreciate of knowledge is really a challenge I think librarians are facing -- whether we acknowledge it or not. I wonder how other educators are dealing with these issues.

This post got me thinking. I really enjoyed your quote, "To me the heart and soul of being a librarian is helping our users turn information into knowledge." This makes the librarians into facilitators of learning, and it also has a helpful, service aspect to it. I like this.

But one question I have is the lack of learning these days. Often students that I encounter think along the lines of "I don't need to know that, Google knows it for me." While that may be true about some things, I think it is still important to acquire knowledge through in-depth investigation. It seems this idea of turning information into knowledge seems less prominent these days.
